Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be a debilitating, deadly disorder if not properly treated. Untreated OSA can lead to snoring, high blood pressure, strokes, worsening of diabetes, excessive sleepiness, acid reflux, teeth grinding, and other maladies. It is estimated that nearly 20 million Americans have undiagnosed OSA. The gold standard for treatment is CPAP, or Constant Positive Air Pressure. CPAP treatment involves wearing a mask while sleeping to deliver air into one's mouth and nose in order to keep the airway from collapsing. Unfortunately, the vast majority of patients either can not or will not be compliant with CPAP. A very successful treatment that is easy for the patient to get accustomed to involves the use of a mandibular repositioning appliance. This dental device prevents the mandible, or lower jaw, and the tongue from dropping to the back of the mouth and then blocking the airway. If you suspect that you have a sleep disorder, please call for an examination. We can discuss your particular situation and discuss the most appropriate course of action for you.
